Ski mountaineering in the Dolomites is usually a demanding enterprise and certainly not for beginners. But the Dolomites offer a ski touring experience with a difference that everyone can enjoy – the famous Sella Ronda, a circular ski route leading round the mighty Sella massif and offering 26 km of downhill trails in a single day. The ascents are no problem – with modern lifts and cableways and the convenience of the Skipass Dolomiti Superski .
The experts can even add a few more kilometres to the Sella Ronda (perhaps the demanding Porta Vescovo trail from Arabba). The round trip of the Sella Ronda should be planned properly. It takes a good six hours.
Explore new things and enjoy magnificent scenery at the same time.
Starting in S. Cristina by the Gardena Ronda Express this round trip takes you to Col Raiser and Seceda. From there you can enjoy a 10-km descent to Ortisei. From Ortisei you can proceed to Alpe di Siusi, which you can ski all along the way from the Laurin chairlift as far as Zallinger. At the Florian lift a bus takes you to Monte Pana. You can get back to S. Cristina on the Monte Pana lift and you’re right back home again. What’s great about this trip is that it’s never crowded.
The Val Gardena Ronda Express is the newest attraction in the marvellous winter paradise of Val Gardena. The underground funicular railway with two compartments and a switch in the middle of the route connects the ski area Col Raiser/Secëda with the ski area Sochers/Ciampinoi and thus the ski area Sella Ronda.
Interesting figures:
The railway covers a distance of 1.2 km and is able to transport some 2,000 people per hour with an average speed of 10 m/sec (some 36 km/h). This sums up to an overall transport time of 3 minutes.
Construction works started in March 2003 and on May 21, 2004 the breakthrough of the tunnel was celebrated. The Val Gardena Ronda Express has been on service since December 2004
